Why We Made the 5 mm Ski Wax Scraper TT-5

Why We Made the 5 mm Ski Wax Scraper TT-5

A ski wax scraper should be a simple tool. It should stay rigid under pressure, hold a clean edge, and remove excess wax without damaging the base.

The ones we used didn't always do that.

They flexed under pressure. The scraping edge dulled with use. And the notches designed to clear the steel edges were deeper than necessary, increasing the risk of cutting into the base around the edges.

We wanted to fix those problems. So we started testing materials, thicknesses, and the shape of the scraper itself.

Not to reinvent the scraper. Just to make one that worked better.

Why 5 mm?

When you're scraping hardened wax off a ski or snowboard, the scraper needs to stay rigid. If it flexes under pressure, maintaining consistent contact with the base becomes harder.

The TT-5 is 5 mm thick, with a 175 × 55 mm profile. The thickness gives it the rigidity we wanted, while the compact shape keeps it comfortable to handle at the tuning bench.

It's made from cast acrylic, selected for its stiffness and suitability for machining a clean, precise scraping edge.

Three shallower notches

The notches serve a specific purpose. They allow you to remove wax around the steel edges without the scraper catching on them.

But deeper isn't necessarily better. If a notch extends too far into the base area, it can catch or cut into the material around the steel edge.

We made the three notches shallower to clear the steel edges while reducing that risk.

Three notched edges also mean you have alternatives when the working edge starts to dull. Turn the scraper and use another edge instead of relying on the same one every time.

An edge you can restore

Every plastic scraper wears with use. The working edge gradually loses its sharpness, making hardened wax harder to remove cleanly.

The usual response is to replace the scraper or keep working with an edge that no longer performs as it should.

The TT-5 can be resharpened with a file. When the edge dulls, restore it and keep using the same tool.

It's a small design decision, but it changes how you use the product over time. A scraper doesn't need to become disposable just because its edge needs maintenance.

Built to be used for longer

We believe good equipment should last through use, not be replaced at the first sign of wear.

Making a tool maintainable is a practical way to reduce unnecessary waste. Instead of buying another scraper when the edge dulls, you can restore the one you already own.

That doesn't make a product impact-free. Materials, manufacturing and eventual disposal still matter. But extending a tool's useful life is a straightforward place to start.

The goal is simple: fewer replacements, less waste, and one tool you can keep using for longer.

Designed for different waxes

Wax formulations don't all behave in the same way. Their hardness and scraping behaviour depend on their ingredients and formulation, as well as temperature and application conditions.

Plant-based waxes can behave differently from conventional petroleum-based paraffin waxes. Some formulations are harder and can leave excess wax that takes more effort to scrape away.

That matters when choosing a scraper. Rigidity, edge quality and control all play a role in removing excess wax cleanly.

The TT-5 isn't designed exclusively for plant-based wax. It's designed for removing excess ski and snowboard wax across different formulations. Whether you're using conventional wax or a plant-based alternative, the same basic requirements apply: a rigid scraper, a clean working edge, and controlled pressure.

The details

The TT-5 keeps the design straightforward.

  • Material: Cast acrylic

  • Dimensions: 175 × 55 mm

  • Thickness: 5 mm

  • Design: Three shallow notches for clearing steel edges

  • Maintenance: Resharpens with a file

  • Storage: Hanging hole

  • Finish: Translucent with white graphics

No unnecessary additions. Just the features we wanted in a scraper we would use ourselves.

Why we made it

We didn't set out to reinvent the ski wax scraper. We wanted one that stayed rigid under pressure, worked cleanly around the steel edges, and could be maintained instead of discarded when its edge dulled.

The TT-5 is the result of that process.

A simple tool, designed around the details that matter: rigidity, control, a usable edge, and the ability to keep using it over time.

We made it because the ones we had kept failing.
